Mounting issues with traffic fines as database chaos leaves 100,000 undelivered

Thousands of traffic camera fines in Cyprus remain undelivered due to widespread problems with citizen database management, officials revealed today.

The scale of the issue emerged after the postal service returned 100,000 undelivered fines last year, either due to incorrect addresses or because citizens failed to collect them, according to officials speaking at the House Legal Affairs Committee.

A representative from the Electromechanical Services Department told lawmakers that of these returned notices, 65,000 were forwarded to private process servers by the contractor company. Despite attempts to locate offending drivers, only 10,000 fines were successfully delivered, while 30,000 cases remained unresolved.

The Ministry of Transport is now advancing legislation to implement an SMS notification system to alert citizens about pending traffic fines.

During the committee meeting, which addressed recent issues with the police platform, AKEL party MPs criticised the police for creating what they described as a platform intended to intimidate people into paying their fines.

The contractor company’s representative attributed the root of the problem to insufficient citizen information in the database system.
