Murdered Kalopsidiotis was “government fixer”, life prisoner claims in prison podcast

A Serbian bodyguard sentenced to life imprisonment for a 2016 quadruple murder in Ayia Napa has accused authorities of corruption in an interview with UK-based Not Guilty TV Podcast.

Dejan Loy, former security guard of murdered businessman Phanos Kalopsidiotis, alleged that Cyprus police fabricated evidence against him and claimed the previous government under Nicos Anastasiades was involved in shadowy activities.

In the three-hour interview with Christian Morgans, Loy said police officers knew of his arrival to guard Kalopsidiotis before he entered Cyprus in April 2016. He claimed an airport officer denied him entry, telling him he needed €700 in cash, and said: “I won’t let you into the Republic to protect this man.”

Loy described Kalopsidiotis as a “government fixer” and spoke of other groups linked to political parties involved in nightlife interests. He disputed key evidence used in his conviction, including claims that he had alerted assassins via mobile phone about Kalopsidiotis’s location at Stone Garden restaurant.

Police, through spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou, responded that “the case was investigated, brought before court, and four persons were sentenced to life imprisonment. An appeal was filed and rejected.” They declined further comment, citing the court decisions.

The murders occurred on 23 June 2016, claiming the lives of Kalopsidiotis, police officer Elias Hadjiefthymiou, his wife Skevi, and one of the attackers, Yani Vogli. The Larnaca-Famagusta Criminal Court convicted Loy and Panayiotis Pentavkas in September 2017 on charges including premeditated murder and weapons possession, based on circumstantial evidence.

The current Chief of Police, Themistos Arnaoutis, who supervised the investigation as head of the Crime Combat Department at the time, was indirectly criticised in Loi’s allegations of investigative misconduct.

The audio interview is available on Spotify, while the video is scheduled for release in the coming days.
