Police arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the killing of Shoaib Khan, 24, in Potamia by Cyprus Police, whilst a second suspect remains at large, authorities said Monday.
Officers have also located a vehicle believed to be linked to the incident.
The suspect faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and conspiracy to commit a felony, police said.
Meanwhile, a 39-year-old man, detained in connection with the same case, has begun providing police with information about a criminal network operating in the occupied north, police sources told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) on Monday. The suspect was arrested on January 15.
Police are seeking several other suspects, including Turkish Cypriots, in relation to the January 6 incident in Potamia.
The suspects face charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, and facilitating illegal entry, transit and residence in the Republic of Cyprus territory.
The incident occurred near the buffer zone near Potamia. Initial police reports indicated the shooting occurred while officers attempted to stop a vehicle believed to be involved in a smuggling operation. However, forensic findings suggesting the man was shot in the back have raised questions and contradicted the initial police account.
Moreover, an initial autopsy of the man’s body ruled out foul play. A second autopsy, performed a few days later, found a 9mm bullet lodged in the man’s back. State coroner Dr Nicolas Charalambous who performed the fist autopsy has been suspended.
