The Electricity Authority (EAC) announced Monday it is entering the final preparatory stages of its smart meter installation programme, beginning with a pilot project across major cities from January 20-25.
The initial trial will test Landis+Gyr E360 meters in selected areas including Nicosia’s Trypiotis district, parts of Germasogeia and Agios Athanasios in Limassol, Finikoudes in Larnaca, and Kato Paphos.
The EU-funded programme aims to install 50,000 meters in its first phase, expanding to 500,000 units by 2028 across residential, small commercial and industrial premises that are billed bi-monthly.
The authority has begun distributing informational leaflets with electricity bills, explaining that installations will require a brief 20-minute power interruption. No action or payment is required from consumers.
Benefits will include daily consumption monitoring, flexible pricing options allowing customers to shift high-energy activities to off-peak hours, and more accurate billing based on real usage rather than estimates. The system will also enable prepayment options and improve fault detection.
The smart meters form a crucial part of EAC’s grid modernisation strategy, facilitating the transition from passive to smart networks while helping detect power theft and restore service more quickly after outages.
