Trump to scrap government diversity programmes on day one

Donald Trump will declare a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and deploy additional military forces as part of a broad set of executive actions planned for his first day back in office, an incoming administration official told the Guardian on Monday.

The border emergency declaration comes alongside plans to end birthright citizenship, reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy, suspend refugee resettlement and complete border wall construction.

Beyond immigration, Trump will sign orders declaring a national energy emergency, ending federal diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes, and establishing a new Department of Government Efficiency, the official said.

Another executive order will specify that U.S. government policy recognises only two sexes – male and female – and require official documents like passports to reflect biological sex.

The incoming administration also plans to issue a memorandum on inflation calling for an “all of government response” to rising prices, though officials provided no specific targets for oil prices.

Other planned actions include ending electric vehicle mandates, designating drug cartels as terrorist organisations, and restoring capital punishment for certain federal crimes, according to the official.
