One of three individuals detained during a demonstration on Ledra Street in central Nicosia was arrested for using their mobile phone camera, raising questions about the application of privacy laws in public spaces.
According to a statement received by local outlet Philenews, the individual was filming video footage, which authorities deemed a violation under the “Law on the Protection of Natural Persons Against the Processing of Personal Data and the Free Movement of Such Data.” The arrest has sparked a broader discussion about the legality of recording in public areas.
The other two individuals remain in custody on charges of public insult and resisting lawful arrest.
