Avoiding traffic fines will lead to court, police say

Police will begin criminal proceedings from April 1 against drivers who have deliberately avoided or failed to receive traffic camera fines, following a two-month grace period for outstanding penalties.

The measure applies to violations recorded between January 2022 and September 2024, with authorities giving motorists until March 31, 2025, to settle unpaid fines, Road Safety Officer George Millis told philenews.

The Law Office has approved criminal prosecution of those refusing to accept their fines, with over 250,000 undelivered penalties currently pending.

Police maintain that drivers are obligated to check for outstanding fines on the management company’s website and that notification of a postal delivery attempt constitutes official notice.

Vehicle owners can verify any outstanding penalties by visiting www.CyCameraSystem.com.cy and entering their vehicle registration number along with their ID number, ARC, or company registration number. Payments can then be made through the police website.

Additionally, police plan to implement a “photoradar list” next month, integrating violation records into computer systems at airports, ports, and checkpoints. This will enable immediate fine issuance to offenders during travel checks.

The initiative comes after a meeting at the Law Office which authorised criminal proceedings against those who have failed to acknowledge their penalties.
