Severe weather disrupts flights across Germany, delays rail services

Relevant News

Hundreds of flights across Germany were delayed or cancelled on Friday as severe weather swept through central and western Europe. The disruption is expected to ease later in the day as conditions improve.

Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest, faced the most significant issues, with at least 120 flights cancelled out of the 1,090 scheduled for the day, a spokesperson for airport operator Fraport told the German news agency dpa. Poor visibility required the clearing of runways, while aircraft de-icing procedures caused further delays.

At Munich Airport, the impact was less severe, with only minor delays reported. Similarly, Stuttgart Airport experienced fewer issues, but authorities advised passengers to arrive well in advance to avoid potential disruptions.

Rail services have also been affected, particularly in the Frankfurt area, where icy conditions have caused delays. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on snowy or icy roads.

In the regions of Lower Saxony, Bavaria, and Thuringia, around 120 road accidents were reported overnight due to the weather. However, no serious injuries were recorded.
