UK restates support for UN-led Cyprus solution process

The British government remains committed to supporting UN efforts for a Cyprus settlement and maintains active dialogue with all parties, the Foreign Office said in a response to the National Federation of UK Cypriots.

The diaspora organisation had written to the Foreign Secretary seeking support for resolving the national issue ahead of David Lammy’s recent London meeting with Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos.

“We continue to support a solution within UN parameters based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality – a model that is internationally accepted and which we believe is broad enough to address concerns on both sides. Ministers have personally emphasised this support to their Cypriot counterparts”, the Foreign Office stated.

The letter acknowledged that the status quo in Cyprus continues to create serious difficulties for all Cypriots.

It welcomed the informal meeting between the two leaders on October 15 under UN auspices, stating that Britain looks forward to further discussions and will continue supporting these efforts as a guarantor power and friend to all parties involved.

The Cyprus issue was discussed during recent meetings between Lammy and Kombos, as well as between President Nikos Christodoulides and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The letter concluded by noting that “Cyprus remains a crucial partner for the United Kingdom” with strengthening bilateral relations, while specifically acknowledging the Cypriot diaspora’s valuable contribution to British society.
