Pope Francis’ call for the reunification of Cyprus during his Christmas message underscores ongoing international interest in resolving the decades-long division of the Mediterranean island, the Cypriot government said on Tuesday.
In his traditional Christmas address delivered from the Vatican, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of breaking down barriers of division and expressed hope for a peaceful solution to the Cyprus issue.
“This holy season is an opportunity for walls of separation to fall—both ideological walls that impact political life and physical walls, such as the division that for over fifty years has scarred the island of Cyprus, fracturing its social and human fabric. I hope for a mutually agreed solution, one that ends this division while respecting the rights and dignity of all communities on the island,” Pope Francis said, addressing the faithful.
The remarks drew praise from Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, who described the Pope’s message as a “powerful show of support” for efforts to find a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem.
“The inclusion of Cyprus reunification in Pope Francis’ Christmas address highlights the need for peace and reconciliation,” Letymbiotis said, adding that the statement enhances global awareness of the issue and aligns with ongoing UN-led efforts.
“This recognition of the importance of a peaceful resolution by a leading international figure like the Pope strengthens the visibility of Cyprus’ plight and complements the Secretary-General of the United Nations’ efforts, particularly as we approach an anticipated multilateral meeting,” Letymbiotis said.
The spokesman reiterated the Cypriot government’s commitment to a peaceful and unified Cyprus, emphasizing respect for human rights and international law in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
