The Education Minister Athena Michaelidou has responded to concerns raised by secondary school teachers’ union OELMEK in a letter sent ahead of the union’s upcoming general conference.

The minister addressed multiple issues, including the contentious teacher evaluation scheme that recently sparked disagreement between the ministry and the union.

Regarding disruptive students, Michaelidou said efforts continue to find suitable premises for an alternative education programme. She disputed OELMEK’s published data about the Rapid Response Team, stating it did not align with ministry decisions and actions.

The minister confirmed plans to expand CCTV installations in schools beyond those already approved, while noting the cabinet’s decision to employ security guards, which aligned with OELMEK’s position.

On the impending 2027 abolition of the appointments list, Michaelidou said the matter is being reviewed with the Law Office due to various legal implications, assuring the union that the ministry’s proposal will be shared with them.

The minister addressed private schools legislation, stating amendments are progressing and will include provisions for administrative penalties.

Regarding State Institutes of Further Education (KIE), she clarified that working conditions would be discussed with SEK and PEO unions, though OELMEK’s suggestions were welcome.

Michaelidou agreed with the union’s stance against management staff secondments, promising resolution through the ministry’s reorganisation. She confirmed that data regarding permanent positions requested by OELMEK is already with the Finance Ministry.

The minister reported that air conditioning has been installed in 50 schools, with 54 more planned in the second phase.

Concluding her letter, Michaelidou emphasised the importance of implementing a new teacher evaluation system, affirming the ministry remains open to discussion and suggestions.
