Parliamentary majority favours delay on taxing bank profits

A majority of parliamentary party leaders are backing the postponement of debate and voting on AKEL’s proposed 5% solidarity levy on bank profits for 2024 and 2025, according to Phileleftheros sources.

The delay request emerged during this morning’s meeting to allow parties time to evaluate banks‘ proposed economic and borrower support measures. This follows an announcement from the Association of Cyprus Banks stating its members are prepared to examine all proposals regarding the banking sector’s role and commit to implementing specific measures.

AKEL insisted on proceeding with today’s scheduled debate of their proposal during the morning meeting. However, the Law Office has reportedly informed parliament that imposing a solidarity levy retroactively on 2024 profits would violate constitutional provisions.

The House plenary session begins at noon, when the parliament presidency is expected to make an official announcement on the matter.
