Health authorities increase capacity at children’s hospitals as RSV cases surge

Relevant News

Cyprus’s paediatric wards are operating at near-full capacity as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases spike across the island, forcing health authorities to add more beds to meet demand.

The State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) has increased bed capacity across all paediatric departments in the past 24 hours, with spokesman Charalambos Charilou telling philenews that the situation is “being monitored very closely.”

“About 80 percent of current hospitalisations in children’s wards are RSV-related,” Charilou said, noting that public hospitals are the only facilities with organised paediatric clinics on the island.

The surge in cases is part of a seasonal pattern, prompting SHSO to expand capacity across most hospitals. Adult medical and pulmonology departments are also experiencing high occupancy rates, with increased patient flow in Accident and Emergency departments.

Health officials have urged parents to be vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if their children show symptoms, advising them to contact their paediatricians promptly or visit the nearest emergency department when necessary.
