Police are finalising their investigation into last Sunday’s fatal collision in Nicosia, which killed 20-year-old Greek medical student Irene Kontogiorgou.
Investigators have confirmed that Kontogiorgou was seated behind the front passenger seat in the rental vehicle when it collided with the DIAS building complex perimeter wall. Police are examining whether she was wearing a seatbelt and investigating the precise impact point that caused the fatal head injury.
Sources close to the investigation say witness statements confirm that one of the seven occupants was travelling in the vehicle’s boot area. Police have gathered testimony suggesting this person was positioned in the boot compartment of the small saloon car, which had been rented online.
The driver faces potential charges for allowing two passengers to travel without seatbelts while driving under the influence of alcohol. The investigation file will be forwarded to the Law Office to determine potential offences and charges.
Investigators note that the single-vehicle nature of the accident has simplified their conclusions regarding liability.
Police are still determining whether all seven occupants were in the vehicle before or after their evening entertainment.
