Police are investigating whether one passenger was riding in the trunk of a rental car when it crashed in Nicosia Sunday, killing a 20-year-old Greek medical student.
The vehicle, designed for five people, was carrying seven passengers when it struck a wall near the DIAS complex. The 20-year-old driver, who had consumed six times the legal alcohol limit for new drivers, had his license for less than three years.
The victim, Eirini Kontogiorgou, was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred at 3:10 a.m., according to police. Investigators noted the impact was not severe enough to typically cause death, suggesting the lack of safety restraint was a crucial factor.
The driver tested at 55mg of alcohol, far exceeding both the 9mg limit for new drivers and the 22mg standard limit. Police continue to gather statements to determine the exact seating arrangement of all passengers at the time of the crash.
