The trial of journalist George Tattis and political activist Oz Karahan, arrested during the 1 October Independence Day parade in a case that has raised freedom of expression concerns, has been postponed until 24 January.
The pair were arrested after attempting to display a banner reading “CYPRUS REPUBLIC: THE ONLY SOLUTION” during the parade. They face charges related to their arrest.
The postponement was granted at Limassol District Court after defence lawyer Efstathios Efstathiou requested additional time, citing incomplete disclosure of evidence by the prosecution.
Dozens of supporters attended the brief court proceedings, including prominent political figures. Among them were Green Party-Citizens Cooperation movement president George Perdikis and vice-president Kyriakos Tsimillis, alongside EDEK political bureau members Takis Christodoulou and Elena Lymbouri.
Members of the “Pancyprian Mobilisation for the Freedom of Cyprus” initiative were also present.
Following the hearing, supporters displayed the controversial banner outside the courthouse, which read “CYPRUS REPUBLIC: THE ONLY SOLUTION – Apartheid is not a solution”.
