President Christodoulides is engaging with senior US Republican party officials, having held and scheduled several telephone conversations with party members, he said Thursday.
Speaking to journalists at the 12th Energy Symposium in Nicosia, Christodoulides addressed questions about Turkey’s reaction to Marco Rubio’s appointment as US Secretary of State. “I won’t comment on Turkey’s reactions, but I can tell you that we are in contact with Republican Party officials. I recently had a telephone conversation with former Secretary of State Pompeo, and tomorrow I have scheduled calls with Republican Senators who recently visited Cyprus”, he said.
Christodoulides noted his familiarity with the new US Secretary of State, highlighting Rubio’s co-signing of Eastern Mediterranean legislation in Congress. “He understands well the role of the Republic of Cyprus and its cooperation with regional states. I’m certain our collaboration will strengthen further”, he said.
Regarding Cyprus issue developments following his meetings with the UN Secretary-General and Turkish Foreign Minister in Baku, Christodoulides confirmed plans were progressing for an informal five-party conference. He said the UN Assistant Secretary-General Di Carlo would visit the region to make necessary preparations.
