Around 12,000 vehicles on Cyprus’s roads are fitted with defective airbags installed across dozens of car manufacturers, the Road Transport Department told a parliamentary Commerce Committee.
The issue has come under scrutiny following the death of 19-year-old Styliani Yiorgalli, with findings linking the incident to faulty Takata airbags.
Authorities are implementing corrective measures to replace the problematic airbags, which pose significant risks to vehicle occupants.
Out of 55,000 affected airbag cases in Cyprus, recalls have been issued for 53,000.
To date, 33,000 airbags have been repaired, whilst another 22,000 vehicles have been notified for recalls but remain unfixed.
Officials also reported that 4,500 vehicles face restrictions during their motor vehicle inspection.
