Workers at ready-mix concrete factories across Cyprus will begin an indefinite strike tomorrow, November 5, as per an announcement by the PEO, SEK, and DEOK construction unions.
The industrial action comes after the unions rejected a proposal from the Ministry of Labour regarding the renewal of their Collective Agreement.
The strike is expected to significantly impact the construction industry.
Following general assemblies in all cities, factory workers decided to proceed with strike action and communicated their decision by letter to the Director of Labour Relations, according to a joint statement from the three unions.
The letter, signed by the PEO, SEK, and DEOK Construction Unions, states that workers at ready-mix concrete factories across all districts voted by secret ballot to reject the ministry’s proposal for collective agreement renewal.
“As a result, the strike measures previously suspended by the unions will resume from Tuesday, November 5, 2024, beginning with an indefinite strike. We regret how the situation has developed, but as workers, we believe the employers’ side has not shown the necessary willingness to resolve the dispute,” the Construction Unions’ boards stated in their letter.
