President Christodoulides attended a student parade marking October 28 national day outside the Greek embassy in Nicosia on Monday, ahead of his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.
Speaking to journalists after the parade, Christodoulides paid tribute to the Greek resistance against fascism during World War II, which he described as “the beginning of the end for fascism and Nazism in Europe”.
The Cypriot president emphasised that commemorations should extend beyond ceremonies and parades, particularly as Cyprus marks 50 years since the Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation of the island’s northern part.
“Our sole objective remains the end of the occupation, liberation and reunification of our homeland”, Christodoulides said, noting that his administration has been working on a specific plan since taking office.
Regarding his upcoming visit to Washington on October 30, Christodoulides said official announcements were expected later today. He noted the invitation follows “several significant developments” that demonstrate Cyprus’s growing regional and international presence.
“From day one, we have positioned ourselves on the right side of history”, he said, indicating forthcoming positive developments in defence, security, investment attraction, and technology sectors.
The president added that Cyprus’s enhanced international standing strengthens its efforts towards reunification, stating that “we are not part of the problem” and emphasising the republic’s potential to offer solutions to international concerns within its capabilities.
