Larnaca is preparing to host its seventh international marathon, which has become a significant fixture in Cypriot and international sporting calendars.
At a press conference held this morning, officials unveiled plans for the 2024 Radisson Blu International Marathon. Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras recalled the event’s inception, acknowledging the initial risks of launching such an ambitious project.
A notable addition to this year’s event will be the participation of Greek Paralympian and world athletics champion Stelios Malakopoulos. The world record holder in the long jump, who lost both legs in an accident at age 19 but continued competing successfully, will attempt to set a new record in the 5km race.
Officials also announced that architect Christos Savva has been commissioned to design the Marathon Park near Piale Pasha, on land provided by Larnaca Municipality to the marathon’s organising committee.
The event, starting from Finikoudes Beach, will feature seven races: the full marathon, half marathon, 10km race, 5km race, 5km corporate race, 1km Fun Race for adults, and the McDonald’s Kids Race.
The marathon has grown to become one of the city’s largest events, supported by major sponsors and organisations.
