The cabinet is set to approve the purchase of 100,000 electronic identities, President Christodoulides announced at the Digital Agenda Cyprus Summit in Nicosia.

Speaking at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, Christodoulides said, “We will approve the incentives for the electronic identity, including the digital signature, to enhance the effectiveness, security, and speed of transactions, ensuring that government services are provided seamlessly and securely.”

The electronic IDs will be available to Cypriot citizens aged 18 and over, with the purchase spread over three years. Each ID will be valid for three years with the option to renew.

Christodoulides emphasised that this decision “will contribute significantly to our efforts for the gradual digital transition of the state.”

The new electronic identities will enable quick electronic identification for accessing information systems with a high level of assurance, recognised at the European level for cross-border transactions. When used for electronic signatures, the IDs will have the same legal force as handwritten signatures.

The president expressed confidence that this initiative would benefit the public, citizens, and the private sector, providing a substantial boost to the development of fully digital services in Cyprus.
