Iran launches barrage of missiles at Israel, Jordan warns it will not become a battlefield

Iran launched a barrage of nearly 200 missiles at Israel on Wednesday in retaliation for the deaths of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, and Abbas Nilforoushan, deputy commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in Lebanon, Israeli and Jordanian officials said.

The Israeli military reported that its air defence systems successfully intercepted most of the missiles, with only a few isolated strikes recorded across the country. No casualties were reported.

Footage shared on social media platform X showed what was described as a “rain” of ballistic missiles over Jordan and Israel, captured by a resident in Amman.

In response to the attack, which saw Iranian missiles traverse Jordanian airspace, Amman issued a warning to both Tehran and Jerusalem.

“Jordan will not be anyone’s battlefield,” said Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi in a telephone conversation with his British counterpart, David Lammy, according to a statement from Jordan’s foreign ministry.

Al-Safadi added that the kingdom would “confront any threat with all its capabilities” and “face any threat to its security, stability, and the safety of its citizens with all the means at its disposal”.

The minister emphasised that Jordan had communicated its position clearly to both Iran and Israel.
