Cypriot Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Costas Mavrides and Giorgos Georgiou expressed their readiness to investigate how the case of the Auditor General can be brought to the European level, stating their disappointment with the Court’s decision.
DIKO’s MEP, Costas Mavrides, presented sharp commentary on the decision, adopting the characterisation of Odysseas Michaelides that it is a dark day for Cyprus.
He criticised the court’s handling of the case, suggesting it fell short of expectations. He drew parallels with previous rulings, arguing that Cypriot courts had failed to adequately protect citizens’ rights, particularly in cases involving abusive clauses.
AKEL’s MEP Giorgos Georgiou expressed his shock and deep sadness, noting that he has already received many messages of disappointment from the public.
“We are killing a man who fought for democracy,” he emphasised.
He speaks of a pre-determined decision by the Court, noting that he believes the Attorney General would not risk his position.
