“The Audit Service and the Auditor General have contributed to bringing scandals to light during a period of steep increase in corruption due to the Anastasiades-DISY administration. Obviously, this is what they didn’t like and found disturbing,” stated AKEL in a press release, commenting on the Supreme Court’s decision to remove Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides. The party added that the entire handling of the matter by Nikos Christodoulides’s government and the Attorney General’s Office “puts public life in uncharted waters with unpredictable extensions and consequences, and for this reason, their responsibilities are immense.”
The full press release:
“The Council’s decision is a very negative development, it constitutes a blow to the independent institution of the Auditor General and severely damages transparency, public accountability, and oversight in our country.
The removal of the Auditor General will further strengthen the questioning and suspicion of citizens towards institutions, authorities, and the political system, as the Audit Service and the Auditor General have contributed to bringing scandals to light during a period of steep increase in corruption due to the Anastasiades-DISY administration, which is rightly considered the most corrupt in our history. Obviously, this is what they didn’t like and found disturbing.
AKEL has strongly disagreed from the outset with the Attorney General’s decision to request the removal of the Auditor General from the Supreme Constitutional Court, obviously with the consent and support of the President of the Republic.
Their action shows a serious lack of tolerance for control, transparency, and criticism. Relations between institutions cannot be resolved in court, and this specific decision will not only not provide solutions but – we are very afraid – will make them worse.
The entire handling of the matter by the Nikos Christodoulides government and the Attorney General’s Office puts public life in uncharted waters with unpredictable extensions and consequences, and for this reason, their responsibilities are immense.
