Some people want violence in the stadiums

The slogan “the cops sell heroin” is well-known, not just among those involved in football and hooliganism.

We were reminded of it in light of Sunday’s fiasco in Limassol and the same old discussions that seem to come up time and again in this unfortunate country.

The match was postponed without any real trouble, and then it kicked off anyway. The issue wasn’t the movement of the away team’s fans.

Anyone with even a basic understanding can see that the AEL and Apollon fans would have done what they did, even without the presence of rival supporters.

Returning to the slogan, the blame falls largely—if not exclusively—on the Cypriot police and those who made the decisions at the time or in the days leading up to it.

We were bombarded all week with talk of the situation in Limassol, the derby, and the protest by Gate 9, only for Sunday to come and for them to act like they were caught off guard.

Clearly, someone is playing us for fools. Someone, or some group, wants violence and does everything they can to make sure incidents happen, so that we can have the same conversations every September, every Monday.

And then, of course, they blame the movement of fans, using it as an “excuse” for their next brilliant idea, just like the Fan Card was.

Until they create a modern football experience, reserved only for VIPs, officials, politicians, and their friends. What’s taking them so long?
