Kurdish activist Kenan Ayaz has filed an appeal against his conviction and sentence by the Higher Regional Court of Hanseatic in Hamburg, Germany, on September 2, 2024. This development has led to the suspension of his extradition procedures to Cyprus, initiated by the Ministry of Justice after his conviction.
According to sources, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, and the Minister himself, Marios Hartsiotis, demonstrated sensitivity to the case.
They requested confirmation of the conviction from the German authorities a day after the verdict and subsequently sought to determine if it was a final decision to initiate extradition procedures to Cyprus.
When the conviction was confirmed on September 3, 2024, the Cypriot authorities requested to be informed whether the decision was final, and were informed today that Kenan Ayaz had filed an appeal, thereby freezing all extradition and transfer procedures.
Our information indicates that there is a one-year timeline for the appeal process, after which the Ministry of Justice, closely monitoring the case, will take further action based on the outcome.
Kenan Ayaz was convicted based on the sole charge of participating in a terrorist organisation, a charge he consistently rejected.
