Menogeia immigration centre to be repurposed as juvenile prison

The government seems to have found a solution for the detention space for juvenile offenders.

Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis announced on Wednesday that the existing building in Menogeia Immigration Detention Centre will be designated as the detention space for juvenile offenders.

This decision will be submitted for approval at the Cabinet meeting.

The Menogeia building meets all necessary specifications for detaining juvenile offenders, according to Hartsiotis. The plan to construct a new, specially designed detention space has been put on hold.

The law for establishing a child-friendly criminal justice system was passed in 2021, but its implementation was delayed due to the lack of a suitable detention facility. Juvenile offenders are currently held in the Central Prisons alongside adults.

The new detention centre will house individuals aged 16 to 21 who were under 18 when they committed the offence.

Individuals under 13 years old are not held criminally responsible in Cyprus.
