The collapse of a dam in northeastern Sudan has caused devastating floods, leading to the deaths of at least 30 people. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
The Arbabat dam, located 40 kilometres north of Port Sudan, collapsed on Sunday due to heavy rainfall.
The flooding has affected approximately 20 villages and displaced thousands of people.
Rescue teams are working to reach survivors and recover bodies, but access to the affected areas is challenging due to the damage to infrastructure.
Agencies have warned that Port Sudan, the country’s largest Red Sea port, may face water shortages in the coming days.
The dam’s collapse has highlighted the deteriorating state of Sudan’s infrastructure, which has been neglected due to the ongoing conflict between the military and the Rapid Support Forces.
This war has diverted resources away from essential services and infrastructure maintenance.
At least 60 people have died and many are missing after the Arbaat Dam collapsed due to heavy rains in eastern Sudan, according to local media.
