Residents of Lageia village endured a weeklong water outage amid a scorching heatwave due to repeated faults in the water supply system, forcing some to resort to bathing with buckets of water.
Locals expressed frustration over the lack of communication from authorities, leaving them unprepared for the disruption.
A group of residents held a meeting in Chirokitia to voice their concerns.
Lefkara Mayor Sophocles Sophocleous and Lageia Deputy Mayor Aristi Miltiadou confirmed the water supply issues but stated that service has been restored. Miltiadou noted that Lageia’s population swells during the summer due to holiday homes, exacerbating the impact of the outage.
The Water Board acknowledged the repeated faults, explaining that initial problems affected high-altitude houses due to low pressure. A subsequent leak within the community necessitated a temporary water shut-off.
In recent days, a faulty connection between the Water Development Department and Lageia’s reservoir was repaired by crews.
An additional leak from the Water Development Department was also fixed, fully restoring the water supply.
