Cyprus Police arrested a 44-year-old man early on Sunday in connection with a burglary and theft at an electrical substation of the Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) in Xylotymvou, Famagusta.

Police received a report shortly after 1 am about a man dressed in dark clothing breaking into the substation and loading various items onto a large motorcycle. When police patrols arrived at the scene, they spotted a man riding a motorcycle nearby, and intercepted him.

A search of the motorcycle uncovered coils of copper wire and iron-cutting tools, for which the man could not provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing, leading to his arrest for an alleged burglary and theft.

Further investigations revealed that the man was driving the motorcycle without a helmet, a valid driver’s license, insurance, or road tax, and that the vehicle had been immobilised since March 2023.

During a body search, the suspect pushed a member of the Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the chest and was subsequently arrested for assaulting a police officer.

Later that day, the 44-year-old was arrested again, this time under a court warrant, for the crimes of burglary, theft, possession of burglary tools during the night, and illegal possession of property. He was brought before the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni, which ordered that he be remanded in custody.

The case is being investigated by the Famagusta CID and the Xylotymvou Police Station.
