The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated on Monday that the liquefied natural gas terminal project (LNG) at Vasiliko will be realised and that it should never have been awarded to the Chinese company CPP-METRON Consortium Ltd (CMC).
Speaking at the ceremony for the repatriation of antiquities and ecclesiastical artefacts stolen and illegally exported by art smuggler Aydin Dikmen and held by the German authorities, President Christodoulides commented on the issue of the implementation of the LNG terminal at Vasiliko.
He stated with absolute certainty that the project should never have been awarded to this particular company. Based on the results so far, he continued, it is clear that they are unable to deliver on their promises.
President Christodoulides affirmed that some decisions have already been made, emphasising that “the project will be realised.”
He added that the project’s implementation is a crucial part of the government’s plan to reduce electricity prices. “Our country has one of the highest electricity prices among EU member states. Our plan, which is a holistic one, consists of three specific pillars to achieve the goal we promised the Cypriot people. And within this framework, the project will undoubtedly proceed,” he noted.
When asked specifically about the floating unit “Prometheus”, President Christodoulides replied, “We already have a Plan B in place, in case the ongoing discussions regarding this particular source do not yield results.”
“Let’s wait and see how the situation unfolds, and we will provide more specific information accordingly. I repeat, we have a plan if the negotiations do not lead to the desired outcome regarding the aspect concerning Prometheus,” concluded President Christodoulides.
