Voice Improvisation Performance by Alexia in the context of the exhibition “Casts of an Island”.

Alexia presents the in-situ voice improvisation performance, “Rite of Passage – Voice in Space: the Voice Improvisation Series”, inspired by the necessity for the creation of a dialogue between the present space and time, the self, and collective historical memory.

The Voice is the vibration that responds and reacts, actively and passively, to the environment and to all that remains obscure in the world of the exhibition “Casts of an Island”. The performance awakens and activates all that we believe is absent and all that we’re longing to bring, as we bear witness to the fifty years of the Turkish invasion and illegal occupation of Cyprus.

“Rite of Passage” is a continuation of the artist’s works, “The Voice Improvisation Series”. These works highlight the feminine perspective, expression, creation and symbolism; representing and conveying the artist’s truth about her identity as a woman of Cyprus, as a displaced individual, as a child of political conflict and war, belonging to the last generation of people who have lived through and who remember the invasion, as an artist assuming responsibility and taking a stance on sociopolitical issues.

Through the act of psychogeography, Alexia explores her Voice; elevating it to a different form of artistic expression, transcending the music genres that have influenced her, thus creating an instantaneous composition amongst those witnessing it, that can never be repeated. On a deeper level, the experience is a ritual of the transition from one state to another. Each rite of passage is a personal and collective way of understanding, defining and redefining the symbolic substrate of the present moment, as well as a becoming, an act of taking responsibility for the self we are choosing to become.

During the performance, which through the voice, creates a meaningful, meditative atmosphere, the audience can silently experience the space, allowing themselves to enter into an internal dialogue, initiated by Alexia.

The “Casts of an Island” exhibition, curated by art collector Nicos Pattichis, showcases over 100 visual artworks of various media, techniques, and styles, mainly by Cypriot artists. These works have been collected with passion and care over the past 35 years. The exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion, highlighting a historically tumultuous period for Cyprus marked by numerous efforts for healing and social restructuring amid significant global changes. As suggested by the title, the exhibition explores the Cypriot historical and social imagination, presenting a unique polyphony that examines critical issues related to historical memory and social progress. The exhibition marks the transformation of the Carob Warehouses—a landmark of Cypriot Modernism in Limassol’s waterfront industrial front—into a major art space.
