England made it hard for themselves yet again, but through sheer grit and determination the Three Lions pushed through to the Euro24 semifinals, showing more calm when it mattered to beat Switzerland in a dramatic penalty shootout by 5-3.
A largely colourless 90 minutes ended 1-1, with Saka’s 80th minute goal, cancelling out Switzerland’s lead. An extra half hour was almost uneventful. Jordan Pickford caught the first Swiss penalty and that was enough for the win.
England will face Holland in the semifinals after the Dutch came from behind to beat Turkey 2-1 in a fast paced encounter, where the winners displayed an impressive 2nd half performance following a lacklustre first 45.
Spain will play World Cup finalists France in the other semifinal.
