Data presented to the House Ad Hoc Committee on the Study of the Demographic Problem by the Ministry of Interior revealed a continuing decline in births among Greek Cypriots.
In 2024, 2,998 babies were born to Greek-Cypriot families, with a near-even split of 1,565 boys and 1,433 girls. This follows a four-year trend, with a total of 32,811 children born to Greek-Cypriot parents from 2020 to 2024.
Births among foreign nationals also decreased. This year saw 1,331 births, bringing the four-year total to 12,427.
The data on Turkish-Cypriot births showed 133 newborns in 2024 (63 boys and 70 girls). From 2020 to 2024, a total of 1,825 Turkish-Cypriot babies with Cypriot citizenship were born.
The discussion surrounding the birth statistics focused on Cyprus’s low birth rate and potential policy solutions.
Committee president Linos Papayiannis, alongside MPs Zacharias Koullias and Prodromos Alambritis, urged the government to provide initiatives to support Greek-Cypriot families and reverse the declining birth trend.
