The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has reported a surge in theft cases, causing disruptions and posing risks to the public and the thieves involved.
Christina Papadopoulou, the spokesperson for the EAC, disclosed that the thieves have been targeting the premises, specifically stealing aluminium doors. This poses a significant danger, as there’s a potential for small children to enter these areas, she said.
Additionally, there has been a notable increase in transformer thefts, adding to the issue’s complexity.
Papadopoulou noted the strategic selection of targets, stating, “They usually go to remote locations, facilities, and non-operational hotel units. However, these thefts lead to power outages in homes and facilities, causing considerable inconvenience for citizens.”
Furthermore, the spokesperson highlighted the inherent dangers for the thieves, with instances of electric shocks having occurred in the past.
In response to the escalating situation, Papadopoulou called upon the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the EAC.
She assured that measures have been taken in collaboration with the police to address and mitigate these security concerns.
The EAC urges citizens to play an active role in safeguarding the integrity of the electricity network by reporting any unusual incidents promptly.
