Gaza humanitarian corridor draws support from several countries, president states

The discussion surrounding the creation of a humanitarian corridor for aid delivery to Gaza has shifted from political to technocratic levels.

Several countries have informed Nicosia of their readiness to send assistance to Gaza through Cyprus.

In a statement last night, President Christodoulides revealed, “We have already been informed by some countries that wish to send humanitarian aid to Gaza through the Republic of Cyprus. Our plan involves maritime transport, the establishment of a maritime humanitarian corridor. I discussed this yesterday with the Emir of Qatar, considering Qatar’s role in this crisis, and we are receiving requests from countries to transfer humanitarian aid here and then transport it to the Palestinians.”

Regarding the implementation timeline, the President mentioned that events are evolving continuously, making it challenging to specify a start date for the transfer of humanitarian aid from Cyprus to Gaza.

Earlier, the government spokesperson mentioned that Cyprus’s initiative for Gaza has transitioned from the political to the technical domain. During a briefing for political journalists, Kyriacos Letymbiotis emphasized the interest shown by the Emir of Qatar in the initiative.

He highlighted ongoing technical considerations, stating, “We have shifted from the political to the technical level. To assist countries interested in this initiative, our experts will visit Qatar, which has expressed interest, to develop some technical details.”

Responding to a journalist’s observation that Cyprus awaits the “green light” from Israel for the maritime humanitarian corridor, Letymbiotis explained, “We are in continuous consultations with Israel to address all technical issues that need resolution for the corridor’s implementation.”

He noted Israel’s initially positive approach to the issue, mentioning statements made by Israeli officials. “On our part, a meticulous plan has been devised to implement the proposal when conditions permit,” he added.
