President Christodoulides, speaking to the press on Thursday after the conclusion of these meetings, characterised them as highly productive, particularly highlighting the extensive discussion held with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Emphasising the historical connections between the two Mediterranean nations and their shared challenges, such as migration, President Christodoulides expressed their mutual commitment to work on a comprehensive roadmap in the near future, aimed at reinforcing bilateral cooperation.

The President also disclosed that Prime Minister Meloni briefed him on Italy’s efforts regarding migration flows and initiatives concerning asylum seekers, as well as the ongoing situation in Syria. Additionally, energy matters were a key point of discussion, with President Christodoulides noting that Prime Minister Meloni had been in contact with the President of ENI and was informed about drilling activities in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

President Christodoulides revealed that Italy is supportive of Nicosia’s proposal for Gaza and that Prime Minister Meloni presented two ideas for more active Italian involvement in this regard. Furthermore, the leaders engaged in discussions on European Union (EU) matters and committed to maintaining close communication.

Both President Mattarella and Prime Minister Meloni accepted President Christodoulides’ invitation to visit Cyprus. President Christodoulides remarked that the last Italian Prime Minister’s visit to the island took place 33 years ago, while this upcoming visit by an Italian President will be a historic first.

During his meeting with President Mattarella, President Christodoulides also highlighted that 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of Cyprus’ accession to the EU, a momentous milestone in the country’s history, and extended an invitation to his Italian counterpart to visit Cyprus.
