Mother of three responsible for fatal accident to be released with presidential pardon

Today, a 44-year-old mother of three will be released, having been imprisoned last May for a fatal traffic accident case, following a decision by the Larnaca District Court.

According to a source from philenews, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, has decided to grant her a pardon. The Legal Service initiated a relevant procedure earlier today, sending a letter to the Presidency. In other words, the formal processes remain, and it is estimated that the matter will be resolved within the next few hours with the transmission of the necessary documents from the Presidential Office to the Prisons Department.

The case was brought to light by Phileleftheros on July 26. The news has drawn attention, as the written request of the 44-year-old, through the law firm Pelekanos & Pelekanos LLC, was supported by the family of the person who lost his life in the accident.

The tragedy is related to the death of Captain Christos Christodoulou of the National Guard, who was fatally injured on December 31, 2020, New Year’s Eve. While riding on Makarios Avenue in Aradippou with his high-cubic centimeter motorcycle, a collision occurred with a leading vehicle, resulting in his fatal injury. The driver of the car was the then 42-year-old mother of three.

Approximately two and a half years later, the 44-year-old immediately acknowledged the crime of causing death due to a reckless or dangerous act, despite the special circumstances of the accident, showing her willingness to take responsibility. The Larnaca District Court imposed an immediate 16-month prison sentence on her, which led to her being incarcerated at the Central Prisons since May 16, 2023.

The letter on behalf of the 44-year-old, in which the request for her release was formulated, was sent last May. It was accompanied by a note from the deceased person’s family. In it, they stated, among other things, that regardless of the legal measures they have taken (e.g., a civil lawsuit in the Larnaca District Court) and their outcome, they have no objection to a pardon being granted by the President of the Republic. They also mentioned that serving the sentence by the 44-year-old will not help in any way the deceased or themselves, but, on the contrary, it is devastating for the convicted person and her family.
