The Novo Nordisk diabetes medication called Ozempic was found to cause significant weight loss in users. But the drug’s side effect of rapid weight loss quickly stole headlines and made it a very hot commodity in Hollywood but also in Cyprus.
However, the head of the Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association, Eleni Piera Isseyek, is ringing alarm bells.
She told Philenews: “We have been observing a gradual increase in the demand for this particular formulation in the past several months.
“Ozempic, like all drugs, can cause side effects and in this case, there is a risk of damage to the liver or pancreas or other vital organs”.
She also said that precisely because of the phenomenon observed internationally the Association has proceeded with very strict controls in pharmacies.
At the same time, doctors have been given special recommendations to prescribe this injectable formulation only when there are medical reasons.
That is, to people with type 2 diabetes, as is the approved indication of the drug which is so hot that it caused some problems for the people it was originally intended to help.
